Dr Asok Kumar Ghosh is a Professor in Sports Science and Head of the Department of Sports Science and Yoga, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (Deemed to be University), Howrah, West Bengal, India. In his more than 40 years of academic career, Dr Asok’s scientific studies have been spread on army personnel, physically challenged people and on sports persons.
Dr Asok started his research career from Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India in Tezpur, Assam in the field of exercise physiology and environmental physiology. Later, he shifted his research work on the physical work capacity of physically challenged people in the Bioengineering Unit of University College of Medicine, Goenka Hospital, Calcutta (now Kolkata), under Calcutta University and was awarded Ph.D. degree on the same research work in the year 1981. His research interests are in sports Physiology, Exercise Physiology, and Sports Nutrition.
Next 20 years, Dr Asok became involved in the research and teaching in the field of sports science in the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Sports Authority of India, Patiala, India. He taught the undergraduate and postgraduate students of Coaching Course and postgraduate diploma course in Sports Medicine to the medical graduates. Dr Asok conducted scientific studies on Indian national players and published plenty of research articles. Thereafter for almost 14 yrs. Asok continued his academic activities in various Universities of Malaysia in the above areas. He also took pioneering attempt to start B.Sc. Sports Science Course in Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kota Bharu, Malaysia.
In his long career, Dr Asok has been engaged in guiding Ph.D. and Masters’ students, examining Ph.D. and Masters’ theses, peer reviewing manuscripts for ranked journals. Dr. Asok has also been engaged in publishing articles in renowned journals, attending and organizing seminars and conferences.
